Supporters needed this Saturday Artisan Market Cranleigh

Hello fab followers

We hope you can pop along and enjoy Cranleigh High Street this Saturday at the Artisan market – first Saturday in each month but NOT in May because of the King’s coronation.

There will be a happy buzz about the place with all sorts of things to buy and groups to find out about.

Please support Cranleigh Society too, and our work to find supporters for conserving, renovating and opening the Napper cottage – the first Cottage Hospital in England, of it type.

We look forward to seeing you,

best regards

The Team

Cranleigh Artisan Street Market this Saturday

Cranleigh Artisan Street Market this Saturday

Hello, Cranleigh Society will have a stall at the monthly Artisan market

Saturday 4th March – this weekend.

Please support the stallholders who bring our High Street alive – it is run by Cranleigh Chamber of Commerce and Surrey Hills Enterprises.

It is going to be cold, cloudy but dry!

We will have a few things to sell. Please come along and chat. We have plenty of information about Cranleigh and all its worries.

Cranleigh Village Hospital is an open day hospital open 9-5 Monday to Friday

Cranleigh Hospital League of Friends is a Charity

they raise money from Cranleigh people and donate it to the NHS for special equipment such as Xray machine, ultrasound machine and hopefully a machine to attract an eye specialist soon.

The original Cranleigh Cottage Hospital – now named Napper Cottage by the working team to save it

This is the beautiful Grade II listed cottage at the front of Cranleigh Village Hospital, beside the Three Horseshoes pub

Cranleigh Society and others are trying to get it repaired and opened to the public.  They have had to start a new charity to do so – it’s called Cranleigh Heritage Trust.

The project to save Cranleigh village hospital’s empty Heritage Cottage is gathering momentum – the team are working very hard to fulfil a Lottery Grant application.  The cottage was built in the 15th Century, nearly 600 years ago! and became the first Cottage hospital of its type in England in 1859, and only closed for medical related uses in 2010. Older people in Cranleigh and villages have plenty of memories of going to the hospital – but probably never went into the very old cottage!

To make it easy to understand that Cranleigh Heritage Trust is not involved with the working hospital, the league of friends, or Cranleigh Village Health Trust – we call the cottage Napper Cottage after Dr Albert Napper who was the first Doctor to rent it.

We hope to see you on Saturday

best regards

The Team

Good social meeting tonight

Hi, and thanks to all who joined in tonight at The Three Horseshoes Pub for social, information sharing (and dinner).

Planning applications

Topics covered – several  planning applications including Knowle Lane and behind Pets Pantry, the Parish council outlined problems with these at their planning meeting;  Speculation about infilling between Ewhurst Road and Seltops Close;

Using fossil fuels

UKOG nearby and under Dunsfold – drilling plans for natural gas -have you seen Councillor Follows on the BBC about this  – click here ?  and see the interview here with UKOG boss.

Thames Water

Thames Water’s plans to bring in further water supplies – but where do the pipes have to go?  for example along the top of the Showground, Bookhurst hill, Alderbrook, Amletts, Smithwood,   TW is taking ages to replace asbestos cement pipes bit by bit around the village, but we are very glad it is happening.  Sewage outflows – there are 4 measuring stations in Cranleigh – all clear at the moment but often not.

Welcome newcomers to Cranleigh

Some people have only been in Cranleigh for 3 or 4 years, and say it’s been difficult to find out what is happening, and to integrate.  They really would like more information about Cranleigh and its surroundings to be available!!!  We encourage joining Cranleigh Society.

GP surgery

Some people report very good help from the doctors’ surgery – can’t fault them, which is great.  Others get rather confused with all the changes. There is a new Patient Participation Group which has had a second meeting and seems to have some useful outcomes so far.

Cranleigh village hospital

The topic of Cranleigh Hospital was reviewed and we spoke fondly of the passing of Jill Wood. Jill actively contributed to committee meetings about the future of the cottage at Cranleigh Village Hospital. Also the possibility of Royal Surrey paying for extra services here in Cranleigh.  She was a nurse at the hospital, an active member of the league of friends and of St Nicolas Church, Cranleigh. Rest In Peace

The new Charity, Cranleigh Heritage Trust, is working with Cranleigh hospital league of friends about how the unused Grade II listed cottage might be restored and used by our community.  It will attract visitors from around the world – as it is a very special building – built around 1446 and with few structural changes. Strange to consider those ancient times – not long after the Battle of Agincourt, for example. The cottage became a vicarage for clergy assisting the Rectors, then the first Cottage Hospital of its type in England, thanks to Dr Albert Napper’s ideas. This project is known between us as Napper Cottage.  The Trustees are making progress with applying for lottery funding. It is a long and difficult journey.  It is hoped it will then be used by our whole community for 4 main reasons:

Napper Cottage – a new lease of life?

The ethos of the cottage project is around these 4 headings – all of which are about education in various forms, including courses to help people with health and wellbeing. None of the resources and information are available at present. Like all other assets in the villages it will need partners to sign up to use the lovely premises.

  • Welcome – a wider range of people will benefit:
    • tourists – Cranleigh is an attractive village, with particularly interesting history, in the Surrey Hills;
    • newcomers – Cranleigh is increasing by one third;
    • locals’ information – find what is local and accessible;
  • Celebrate and learn about Heritage –
    • Cranleigh village and environs,
    • the cottage hospital movement which started at this cottage,
    • the architecture of timber framed buildings over 1000 years, the cottage was built around 1446;
  • Improve Health and wellbeing –
    • Information about help available nearby or at the cottage especially patients of the nearby GP practice and day hospital;
    • Services new to Cranleigh will be attracted in by the cottage project, providing new services to those in need;
    • interest groups such as History society;
    • therapies such as practitioners offering one to one help and advice;
    • social groups such as u3a smaller groups;
  • Education –
    • schools,
    • colleges,
    • student careers (medicine, surgery, caring)

Thanks for reading this far – we will be chatting with the Rt Hon Anne Milton soon to see if she has some great ideas to help with Napper Cottage.

Napper Cottage at Cranleigh Village Hospital

Napper Cottage at Cranleigh Village Hospital

Cranleigh Society’s feasibility project to save the 15th Century cottage at the front of Cranleigh Village Hospital is looking good!

Thank you for joining our community!  Cranleigh Society supports numerous projects in the village, and interacts with many who provide services, with a view to shining a light on what is happening and holding those to account who represent us all.

Cranleigh Society open meeting and AGM will take place on 7th December, 7pm Band Room, Cranleigh, all welcome.  We would also like new people to join the team – is that you?

Some of you are particularly interested in keeping up to date, and possibly supporting – taking part – in the Napper Cottage project.  We can agree that the cottage and its story are fascinating!

Update so far

December 2020 – the cottage – at the front of Cranleigh Village Hospital – was in a very poor state of repair and has been unused since around 2010.  Cranleigh Society formally complained to NHS Property Services who then made some essential repairs with our team’s input.  No other group wants to help save this cottage. It is not fit for medical uses.

Your Support – Many people in and around Cranleigh have responded to our team and our questionnaires – if the cottage could be saved what would they like to see taking place there – and we enjoyed meeting folk at the monthly Artisan Markets.

The Cranleigh Society Team – has worked on the feasibility of saving and using the cottage, separately from the functioning hospital, and NHS Property Services have offered a lease to a charity.

Highlights –

Established the two most important aspects of the cottage

  • the building is very old, grade II listed and has not been altered much over the centuries
  • the building became the first cottage hospital in England which led to a cottage hospital movement and the ethos of the NHS in terms of funding health care for those in need

A new charity – The team has been joined by others and formed a Charity named Cranleigh Heritage Trust.  Trustees and a committee are in place.

Public engagement seeking ideas for its future, through conversations and questionnaires, including at the monthly Artisan Markets in Cranleigh.

Agreed a vision for the cottage which, at this stage, includes

  • The first Cottage Hospital in England open to the public to view, where heritage items can be displayed, being changed regularly, exploring the life and times of the cottage since 1446.
  • Meetings for health and wellbeing in this cosy, charming, historic cottage, and spaces for rent that are different from others in the area.
  • Tourist information and welcome for newcomers, including website links.
  • Education for all, especially schools and colleges.

Feasibility study – Applied for and received grants to carry out feasibility study – this involved structural and various other surveys which showed the building can be saved.

Business planning – this has begun and the case made to the National Lottery Heritage Fund to see if they agree this building can and should be saved and used.

Open meeting – if you can attend please do go and hear more about the 2 years’ work and be part of this exciting High Street challenge!  After the meeting further details will be published here so do check in often.   A new questionnaire will be added to the website too.

Plea – we are keen to welcome more talented people to both Cranleigh Society team and Cranleigh Heritage Trust charity.  Please get in touch – you can comment in the box below or email membership@cranleighsociety.org

We very much hope you will continue to welcome our updates, but you are always able to

update your preferences or unsubscribe from this list.

Thank you.
